About 140 million phones are discarded in the United States each year, according to Sprint. Last year, Nokia released a survey of more than 6,500 customers in 13 countries that found only 3 percent recycled their old phones, and 44 percent kept them even though they didn't use them. The US Environmental Agency, meanwhile, estimates 10 percent of all cell phones are recycled.
